Summer greetings to my friends without children…
Summer is here and parents are sending their kids off to camp. I remember my boyhood summers back in Iowa like they were yesterday – they were a blast! Sports camps, Little League Baseball, backyard camp-outs, family vacations, and riding on the big yellow machines at my dad’s construction sites. How would you like to relive some of your memories and help send a couple of great kids to a summer basketball camp in my hometown of Decorah? The basketball camp is held at Luther College and is conducted by NBA guard B.J. Armstrong of the Golden State Warriors. Armstrong is a former Iowa star and Chicago Bull.
I coach seventh grade traveling basketball at Southwest High School in Minneapolis with my good friends Greg and Fred Ewing. We are a cash-starved urban team competing against well-funded suburban schools. In the city, we are one of only three available programs. Our program incorporates a very diverse demographic and socioeconomic area, from Lake Harriet to downtown Minneapolis. We are very proud of the twelve players composing the team. They are good kids, great sportsmen, and finished 1997 with a 29-12 record and fifth place in the state Class AA tournament. We will coach the same group next year on the eighth grade level. There’s no need for any more sugar-coating – we have kids from struggling single-parent homes in high-risk neighborhoods.
I am seeking your assistance in helping me send two players to camp. Don’t feel obligated, but let me tell you this, it will be a pleasure well worth the money for you to watch the Southwest Lakers take the court next winter.
Here is the game plan:
Each player needs $315 for camp registration
$315 x 2= $630
If 60 friends of Rex’s contribute $10 that equals $600
If we have won your hearts and you can afford to send $10 or more, it will help make this summer memorable for two very appreciative young men.
Have a great summer,
Rex
